Fort Morgan provides visitors an in-depth look at of one of the most critical naval battles of the Civil War: The Battle of Mobile Bay, where Union naval forces fought victoriously against the 46 guns of Fort Morgan in the summer of 1864 to take the Bay. Mobile Bay was one of the Confederacy’s last big ports available for conducting necessary European trade (the other was in Savannah, Georgia), so the Union’s victory here contributed greatly to the economic crippling of the Confederacy — and helped pave the way for Abraham Lincoln’s re-election later that year.

One aspect of the Battle of Mobile Bay eventually entered into American cultural consciousness. The Union lost their lead ironclad, the USS Tecumseh, early in the battle when the ship struck one of the naval mines (which at the time were known as “torpedoes”) strewn about the Bay. Union Admiral David Farragut, under heavy fire from the guns of Forts Morgan and Gaines and the Confederate fleet — and now without his lead ship — chose to mount an advance on the mainland rather than stage a retreat. So it was that Farragut first issued those now-legendary orders: “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!”

There is an easy-button cure for parkas, snow blowers, and single digit temperatures – the beaches of the Alabama Gulf Coast. The winter weather forecast can be a bitter pill to swallow for those in the Northeast and Midwest. Hundreds of snowbirds also dedicate a portion to their time to organizing and presenting the annual Brat Fest, which has raised thousands of dollars for area fire departments.

Outdoor activities reign supreme all year long. Fitness buffs will be glad to know there are walking and biking paths winding throughout both cities. Also, there are recreation facilities in both Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. Golfers have access to more than 10 courses all within an hour drive of their beach accommodations.

Various organized bus trips are also made available to snowbirds. Mardi Gras, the National World War II Museum, and the Naval Aviation Museum are just a few of the possibilities.

The snowbirds may come down to the Gulf Coast to get away from blinding blizzards and treacherous ice storms. But, before they leave for home, they have made lasting friendships and had a positive impact on the area. A combination of the two explains why so many of them return year after year. Bp Recovery Fund Czar May Compensate Vacation Rental Property Owners

With much of the income from vacation rentals rolling in in the Summer, it has been a rather disappointing few months for the many vacation property owners within the Florida region. Many have found themselves taking substantial losses and with the BP Deepwater disaster still spilling down the gulf, there looks like little respite in regards of a lack in bookings.

Keith Feinberg, the man appointed by president Obama as the pay czar of BP’s $20 billion relief fund having performed a similar task in 2001 regarding 9/11, has stated that owners of vacation rental properties who have lost income due to the disaster, could receive compensation. Though he has acknowledged that determining whether to pay those who have not suffered direct damage will be a tough matter to reside over.

Around 3 million vacation rental properties, throughout the four states affected by the spill, fall between the guidelines set out by Feinberg. Rental property in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida’s panhandle may be able to receive hel paying for their mortgages or any other bills they struggle to meet due to the ongoing Oil Disaster.

“That claim should be filed,” said Feinberg, referring to vacation rental owners. “It should be corroborated. I don’t know what corroboration. We’ll see, but absolutely those claims will be considered.”

Homeowners in the area have also been affected, as property values are set to be affected by the spill, and it is estimated values of houses along Louisiana coastlines will reduce by 30 per cent. Yet this matter remains obstinately gray territory. “Property value has diminished as a result of the spill,” says Feinberg, “Let’s assume that’s right. That doesn

‘t mean that every property is entitled to compensation. It’s a thorny issue.”

Vacation property management companies with Destin vacation rentals and all along the panhandle of Florida, have also been subject to major losses as cancellations have resulted in an absence of business over the Summer period. Yet Destin is still open for business so to speak with its beaches remaining unclosed for tourists, while many events such as fishing rodeos have had to be canceled due to the Deepwater spill. There have been measures implemented to preserve the beaches, though these attempts have been marred by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990′s litigation that the Oil Company must lead the clean up, leaving the state of Florida rather powerless, and waiting for BP’s favoured retroactive clean up of the mess.

An estimated 2 million gallons of oil are flowing in to the gulf of Mexico everyday since the leak explosion of late April, and has become recognised as the worst environmental disaster in US history. Receiving payment from BP’s relief fund does not mean property owners and those affected by the disaster forefeit the rite to to file a lawsuit with BP, for other damages incurred.

Now of all the five states bordering the gulf of Mexico have been affected by the spill, with tarballs appearing in Texas Earlier in July. As the situation is still playing out it is hard to predict the areas in which BP’s $20bn relief fund will be allocated, yet Feinberg seems to be quite open in regards to claims. Feinberg is said to be trying to improve the claims process, asnd is expected to speed up the payments, releasing emergency lump sums to businesses. Payments from BP’s $ 20 billion relief fund will not have pre-determined limit.
